Retro Photo Challenge Winners 🏆

Our October photo challenge in the Archipelago Collective group took us on a nostalgic trip back in time! We invited members to plan and share their best retro-inspired photoshoots—or post their favorite throwback images that captured those vintage vibes. From 70’s film grain and 80’s VHS tape aesthetics to dreamy Polaroid-inspired tones, the creativity in the group was absolutely incredible. We were so blown away by the variety, detail, and storytelling in every submission.

Now, we’re excited to share the winner and runners-up from the #RetroPhotoChallenge—each one a perfect nod to the timeless charm of retro photography!

Winner of the #RetroPhotoChallenge: Mary Berg Photography

We loved this super nostalgic vintage-inspired session photographed by Mary in Ontario!

Gear: Nikon D850, 24-70mm 2.8 lens

5 Stars! These presets are so professional! With Archipelago, I can edit any type of session with confidence! I love that they are current with the technology, and we get the best presets out there! I highly recommend becoming a member and a Quest member; it’s like Christmas once a month, every month!

What or who inspires your photography?

Definitely Archipelago, but that’s a given! I’m inspired by Nathan Chanski, he has great tips on how to show up professionally.

What’s your favorite photography tip?

Once you move past the beginner basics of learning your camera, light meter, and how to use both natural light and flash, the best photography tip is to focus on building a trusting relationship with your clients.

What’s your favorite bit of gear and why?

My favorite piece of gear is my Nikon D850 camera. It’s not mirrorless, but it’s a beast! The dynamic range is incredible, and with my favorite lenses, the 85mm 1.4, 24-70 2.8, and Sigma Art 35mm 1.4, I don’t feel the need to switch to mirrorless anytime soon.

We also wanted to give a special mention to these amazing photographers and their #RetroPhotoChallenge photos!

Runner Up: Annie Leigh Photography

Gear: Canon Rebel T1i & EF50mm f/1.8 STM

Archipelago Presets felt like coming home, creatively. The tonal depth, the moodiness, the emotions, the perfect vibe that each set helps to emphasize is so uniquely perfect.

Runner Up: Wendy Kathleen Photography

Gear: Canon R5, Canon 50mm 1.2

Archipelago Presets have allowed me to replicate the vision in my head directly into my photography with ease. They offer a beautiful base while providing me the ability to adjust and fine-tune each photo during editing. Each session has an individual voice and requires different paint brushes to bring it to life. Even though the presets vary, there is an overall consistency they offer which allows me to preserve the Wendy Kathleen Photography look.

Runner Up: Jay Phina Photography

Gear: Canon R6 with a 35 1.4 lens

I love the tones that Del Mar gives me especially for the vintage look. I have tons of different presets from all different folders and I love so many sets of them. They are very versatile. Indoor, Outdoor, vintage, modern etc! I use different ones depending on how I feel the session should be edited.
